Estrus Synchronization
Estrus management in dairy cows is necessary to achieve predictable breeding and calving seasons.
Objectives:
- To obtain a calving interval as close to 365 days as possible –> Spontaneous occurrence and/or induction of estrus and insemination of the maximum number of cows as soon as possible postpartum.
- Maximize milk production –> Induction of estrus and insemination of the maximum number of cows as soon as possible postpartum.
- Planning of lactation in the herd according to particular market demands (favorable price, seasonal products, etc.) –> Synchronization of estrus and breeding of groups of cows.
- Reduce labor expenses –> Induction and synchronization of estrus for fixed time insemination. Reduces or eliminates the need for labor for estrus detection.
- Management of embryo donors and recipients in embryo transfer programs.
Pharmacological estrus management can be used as therapeutic measure in cases of:
- Postpartum anestrus
- Cystic Ovarian Disease
- Persistent corpus luteum
In cattle with active ovaries, the estrus cycle can be manipulated through:
- Prostaglandins
- Combination of prostaglandins and GnRH (OvSynch protocol and modifications)
- Progestagens (progesterone and progestagens)
In dairy herds with high incidence of ovarian inactivity the following systems are recommended:
- OvSynch protocol and modifications
- Progestagens (progesterone and progestagens)
